Farmers learn new rice research technologies
Dr. Noli Vera Cruz (left), IRRI plant pathologist, explains to a group of farmers in Laguna the agricultural and economic implications of biotechnology
for rice research and development.
IRRI is objectively evaluating new strategies and options that biotechnology may offer the rice industry and is collaborating with its partners in the national agricultural research
and extension systems of rice-producing nations to see whether such strategies are suitable and sustainable in different countries. The Municipal Agriculture Office of Bay, Laguna Province, organized the farmers' educational seminar on new rice research technologies. Click

Double-cropping MV-TV in the
Cagayan Valley
A few years ago, the Cagayan Valley suffered a severe drought caused by El Niño, followed by repeated typhoon flooding. This double-barreled disaster caused the loss of its traditional rice varieties. Today, IRRI is playing a key role in helping farmers regain the region's pivotal roles in rice production and the conservation of rice biodiversity in the Philippines.
Early last month, a team of anthropologists and researchers from the
Institute and their counterparts from PhilRice in Isabela Province trekked to the Cagayan Valley, now considered the country's new rice granary, and talked with farmers.
The
scientists aimed to encourage farmers from selected municipalities in Cagayan to adopt a double-cropping pattern, growing modern and traditional rice varieties (MV-TV) including the aromatic
Wagwag rice, and to train them in
seed management and conservation. For t2 days, on 4 and 5 June, 118 farmers from eight barangays in Tuguegarao stayed at the Agricultural Pilot Center of the Department of Agriculture Region II Lowland and Marine Outreach Station, in barangay Iguig, for an IRRI-organized workshop on valuing and
promoting indigenous rice varieties in the Cagayan Valley. Also attending were municipal
farmers and a representative from the Green Core Foundation, Inc. (GCFI), a nongovernmental organization.

Call for nominations: CGIAR Science Awards
The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) invites nominations for the CGIAR Science Awards. Formerly known as the CGIAR Chairman's Science Awards, these awards were established in 1996 to honor scientific research excellence and achievements in the CGIAR
system. Each award consists of a certificate and a cash prize of $5,000. This year's awards seek to honor outstanding individuals or groups in the following categories: Promising Young Scientist, Outstanding Scientist, Outstanding Scientific Support Team, Outstanding Partnership,
and Outstanding Scientific Article.
Nominees may be from headquarters or outreach research sites/offices of
a center. They may also be from other institutions (NARS, advanced research institutions, civil society, private sector)
that collaborate in implementing a program with a center. Previous awardees do not qualify for
nomination. Click here
for nomination requirements.
Nominations are due in the DDGP office on or before 30 July. An Evaluation and Selection Panel composed of the Chair of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), Chair of the Committee of Board Chairs (CBC), and three eminent scientists from institutions outside the CGIAR will evaluate nominations and select the winners. The TAC and CBC Chairs will co-chair the Evaluation and Selection Panel. The CBC Chair will recuse himself from participating in the evaluation and selection process on award categories for which his
center submitted entries. The 2001 awards will be presented at the CGIAR Annual General Meeting in
October. Click here
